This drawing class is a creative exploration of the relations between music and drawing. What happens when we establish dialogues between these two disciplines? To this relation we call Visual Music, other times also called colour music, referring to the use of musical structures in visual imagery. These concepts refer to methods or devices which can translate sounds or music into a connected visual presentation. An expanded definition of this concept may include the translation of music into painting. In fact this was the original definition of the term, coined by Roger Fry in 1912 to describe the work of Wassily Kandinsky.

Can a drawing express how a song makes you feel? Can it represent ideas you had while listening? Could it express how your spirit might be changed after a musical experience?

Together we will address gesture, rhythm, silence and texture as these concepts are found in both music and drawing. When organised through sounds over time or shapes in space they have the ability to communicate ideas and emotions. Christoph Poppen was invited to curate and select some pieces of music for this class. This material will be used as the starting point for our class. We will focus on expressing through drawings the emotions evoked by each composition. We will look at how different excerpts of the pieces can be translated in different lines, patterns and various shapes. As an example, a monotonous, stretched sound of a violin could be visually translated into long, dark lines forming a rhythmic pattern.

No previous drawing skills are required.  This class is designed as a creative activity organised through a sequential set of mindful exercises. The exercises will stimulate our cognitive abilities to focus and to develop attention and memory. This will take place while listening to music and observing what we draw. Through drawing we are practicing fine motor skills of our nervous system and we will develop the ability to make movements using small muscles in our hands and wrists. Together we will also exercise new paths of imagination – one of the most powerful traits of human beings.
With this class we expect to understand music in new ways and produce drawings with meaningful to us. We welcome you to be part of this creative journey! You will be able to take your drawings home with you.
