About Marvão

The village of Marvão dominates the surrounding landscape from the top of an 800-metre-high rocky cliff.

A vast defensive structure of walls and bastions surrounds Marvão, giving it the distinctive character of a medieval fortified village. Built for defensive purposes, it is the only Portuguese fortress that retained its strategic importance well into the nineteenth century, and it preserves a rich historical and military heritage. As part of the first defensive line of Portuguese territory, Marvão played a role in all the country’s major wars against external enemies.

Located in the heart of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, in an area still largely untouched by human presence, Marvão offers an important range of natural habitats. The geological diversity of granite, limestone and quartz, combined with the altitude and orientation of the area, gives rise to various microclimates, which are home to a rich variety of fauna and flora.

The many rural roads that criss-cross the municipality of Marvão offer excellent opportunities for walking, cycling and horse riding.

“In the valley south of the castle, the ruins of the Roman city of Ammaia and its museum are also well worth a visit.”

Regional gastronomy is marked by dishes based on kid goat, lamb, pork, game and cured meats, as well as products linked to chestnuts, honey, olive oil, mushrooms and the aromatic herbs of the hills. Traditional sweets also remain an important part of the local identity, including apple boleimas, bolos fintos, rice pudding, escaldados, rosquilhas and a wide variety of chestnut-based desserts.

In recent years, the village and the region of Marvão have also developed a more diverse gastronomic offering, bringing together taverns, restaurants serving regional cuisine, contemporary projects and more intimate dining experiences, often rooted in local products and a close connection to the region. Without losing its rural and Alentejo identity, Marvão now offers visitors the chance to discover the area also through its food, between traditional flavours, new interpretations and carefully crafted gastronomic experiences.

Throughout the year, the municipality promotes events dedicated to seasonal products, with the Chestnut Fair, held on the second weekend of November, standing out as the municipality’s main gastronomic event, featuring cultural initiatives and markets for chestnuts, honey, liqueurs, dried fruits and other local products.

Marvão can be quite hot in the day but with cold nights, we recommend to anyone who will watch the concerts that bring hats for the sun, range, comfortable shoes, sweaters or shawls.
